How To Apply For Driving License 2022: Learners license, Eligibility, Documents

A driving license is an essential and mandatory document to drive a motor vehicle in any public place. A driving license is issued by the transport authority. The driver must have the relevant license in his name for the particular vehicle category of the vehicle he is driving, only then he will be considered as an authorized driver.

In order to develop information technology in the field of road and transport and ensure convergence and interoperability across the country, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has approved the Central Motor Vehicle Act for issuance of Smart Card based Driving License and Certificate of Registration. Provisions have been made in the Vehicles Rules 1989.

The Ministry has developed a standardized software (“Vahan” for Registration Certificates and “Sarathi” for Driving Licences) and this software has been made availabTopicele to all the States. The software includes both automation and computerization of RTOs to enable the issuance of documents, such as driving licenses and registration certificates in the form of smart cards. All RTOs have been integrated with it for easy availability of data.

The Ministry has also taken up the project of creation of State and National Registers for Driving License and Registration Certificates as a Mission Mode Project using this software medium.

How to get a driving license?

The applicant who is eager to apply for the driving license can apply on the Official website of Sarthi. The applicant should have all the required documents. The candidates have to pass an online exam at the Nearest RTO Office. The exam will be of 15-20 questions out of which the candidates have to secure 9 Correct answers. The question will be based on traffic rules and Signals.

There are broadly two types of driving licenses:

Apprentice’s License (Learner’s License):

Applicant has to pass the test after the document verification.It is a temporary license that is valid for 6 months. It is issued for learning to drive a motor vehicle subject to certain conditions.

Permanent license

Permanent License: Final document authorization authorizing you for valid driving. One can apply for a permanent license after completion of one month from the date of issue of the apprentice license.

Eligibility for Driving License

  • The applicant for a driving license should be 18 years as of the date of application
    1. For commercial vehicles, the applicant should be 20 years
    2. For vehicles with engine capacity up to 50 cc Applicant should be 16 years of age along with his/her guardian / must have the consent of the guardian).

Documents Required to Apply for Learners license

Following documents are required to apply for apprentice license:

  • Application Form (Available at Local Transport Authority)
  • Address proof age certificate
  • Latest 3 passport size photograph of the applicant
  • Medical Certificate in Form No.-1A
  • Self-declaration of medical fitness in Form No-1
  • An expected fee as decided by the authority.
  • After verification of the document, the color blindness (ability to recognize color) of the applicant is checked.

How to get an apprentice (for learning) license?

This is followed by a test of 20 minutes with 20 multiple-choice questions. The applicant who passes this test is issued a learner’s license. The authority also provides a booklet so that the applicant can read it before taking the test for the apprentice’s license. obtaining a permanent license To get a permanent license: Applicant should have a valid Learner’s License.

How to Get a Permanent License?

The Applicant who is applying for a Permanent Driving License Should have a Learners license which should not older than 180 days i.e 6 months from the date of issuance. If in any case, the learner’s license is older than 6 months/becomes invalid/obsolete the applicant has to re-apply for the Apprentice license(Learners License).

The applicant can apply for a Permanent license after 30 days of issuance of the learner’s license and the applicant should apply for a permanent license within 180 days i.e 6 months before the expiration of the learner’s license.

Documents Required for Permanent License:-

Applicants should be familiar with driving, traffic rules, regulation, and vehicle system. required documents

  • Valid Original Apprentice License (Learner’s License)
  • Application in Form No.-4
  • Application Fee
  • Certificate of age
  • Residence Proof (Electricity bill, ration card, etc) should same as in Aadhar card(Exact)
  • One latest passport size photograph
  • Form No.-5 in case of commercial license

After the verification of the document, the driving test of the applicant is taken. In this, the applicant is tested for driving skills, familiarity with the vehicle, information about traffic rules and regulations. If the applicant passes the driving test, he is given a permanent license. In case the applicant fails, he/she can re-appear for the driving test after 7 days.
